The titles were originally released on two Keepnews-helmed labels Riverside Records which recorded landmark jazz albums in the '50s and early '60s and Milestone Records which launched in the late '60s. The collection remastered in 24-bit from the original master tapes allows Keepnews to revisit some of his accomplishments as a producer. The latest batch of Keepnews gems comprise four from his Riverside years and one from Milestone: Clark Terry: Serenade to a Bus Seat (1957) Sonny Rollins Sound of Sonny (1957) Thelonious Monk Orchestra: At Town Hall (1959) George Russell Sextet: Ezz-thetics (1961) and McCoy Tyner: Horizon (Milestone 1979). All except for the Terry CD feature bonus tracks. In his written introduction to the series Keepnews notes "For more than a half-century I have frequently succeeded in finding recognizing coddling arguing and collaborating with a great variety of talented and occasionally difficult people. On the whole I am unreasonably and unshakably proud of the results." He adds that the Keepnews Collection spotlights albums of special importance-"some because of the initial impact they made others because they have particular personal meaning or may present a performer whose value has not been fully appreciated." The first group of Keepnews Collection reissues featured Thelonious Monk's Plays Duke Ellington (originally released on Riverside in 1955) guitarist Wes Montgomery's Full House (Riverside 1957) trumpeter Kenny Dorham's Jazz Contrasts (Riverside 1957) alto saxophonist Cannonball Adderley's Cannonball Adderley Quintet in San Francisco (Riverside 1959) and tenor saxophonist Joe Henderson's Power to the People (Milestone 1969). The second installment of the series spotlighted pianist Bill Evans (Everybody Digs Bill Evans Riverside 1958) trumpeter Chet Baker (Chet Riverside 1958-59) saxophonist Jimmy Heath (Really Big Riverside 1960) drummer Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers (Caravan Riverside 1962) and vocalist Flora Purim (Butterfly Dreams Milestone 1973). Following are five snapshots of the third edition of the Keepnews Collection: Clark Terry: Serenade to a Bus Seat (1957) The first of four albums he recorded for Riverside trumpeter Clark Terry's Serenade to a Bus Seat pays homage to his early days on the road most prominently with Count Basie and Duke Ellington with five originals and three standards most notably Charlie Parker's "Donna Lee." Along for the bebop ride are tenor saxophonist Johnny Griffin (who sounds combustibly great in combination with the leader) and a stellar rhythm section comprising pianist Wynton Kelly bassist Paul Chambers and drummer Philly Joe Jones. In his liner notes Keepnews writes: "Although this has been one of my favorite records for many years I had no way of recognizing how accurately it predicts much of the Riverside future." Sonny Rollins Sound of Sonny (1957) This is Sonny Rollins in his prime in the late '50s. In what the All Music Guide to Jazz calls "an excellent if not essential release from the masterful tenor man " Sound of Sonny was his debut Riverside disc. It features the support team of pianist Sonny Clark bassists Percy Heath and Paul Chambers (on two tracks only) and drummer Roy Haynes delivering a collection of covers and such Rollins originals as "Cutie" and the bonus track "Funky Hotel Blues." Rollins who Keepnews calls "unquestionably one of the greatest and most intuitive of improvising soloists music has ever known " goes it alone on a sublime version of "It Could Only Happen to You." Thelonious Monk Orchestra: At Town Hall (1959) One of Thelonious Monk's most brilliant albums and heralded as a bona fide jazz classic At Town Hall features the pianist performing with a well-rehearsed tentet (including trumpeter Donald Byrd baritone saxophonist Pepper Adams tenor saxist Charlie Rouse alto saxist Phil Woods) that magnificently renders several of his compositions arranged by Hal Overton. Key to this disc are the four bon
