Ostrander Vice Chancellor for Resarch and Graduate Education SUBJECT: BIOSAFETY AND BLOODBORNE PATHOGENS TRAINING FOR LABORATORY AND TEACHING PERSONNEL The University of Hawai i (UH) is committed to providing the UH community with a safe working environment. UH Federal and State training regulations require employees who work with biological materials including infectious agents and recombinant DNA to have general biosafety training that addresses safe work practices and basic biosafety principles. This general biosafety training is provided to all faculty and staff online or in the form of classroom training. Online training is provided at https://laulima.hawaii.edu/join/uh biosafety as a self-guided training with an online quiz. For classroom trainings please contact us online at http://manoa.hawaii.edu/ovcrge/research/biosafety program/contact.html to schedule a training session. General biosafety training is to be completed every two years either in the classroom or online. Pursuent to OSHA CPL 02-02-069 Enforcement Procedures for Occupational Exposure to Bloodborne Pathogens prior to beginning work with blood blood products human body fluids unfixed human cells tissues or organs bloodborne pathogens or other potentially infectious materials all workers must receive training on hazards associated with bloodborne pathogens. Initial bloodborne pathogens training must be provided in a classroom interactive setting. For personnel working in research and teaching laboratories please contact us online to schedule training sessions. Online training and testing is to be accessed at https://laulima.hawaii.edu/join/uh biosafety as a self-guided training for those who have taken Distribution List April 22 2010 Page 2 the initial training. Annual refresher training is mandatory. All other personnel should contact Ms. Emma Kennedy 956-3204 ekennedy@hawaii.edu or labsafe@hawaii.edu. Please inform your employees of these requirements.
