S I M O N POSTOLI & J U D E C A T H E D R A L Marriage in the Church A Letter from Our Cathedral Rector Dear Friends We may well remember from our Catechism what a sacrament is: an outward visible sign... given to us by Christ... to give grace. Grace is power from heaven given freely by God to help us live as He wills. The sacraments are administered in the life of the Church and are conducted according to her Rites... in this way the celebration of a sacrament is "valid " meaning it brings about the effect that's being signified. And so Baptism brings about cleansing and new life. In Confirmation we're given the Seven Gifts of the Holy Spirit to journey through life strong in God's grace. In Holy Communion we're sustained and strengthened with food and drink from heaven. In Penance & Reconciliation we're set free from what can hold us down. In Holy Orders the priesthood of Jesus Christ is perpetuated to provide for the life of His Church. In the Anointing of the Sick souls are made ready for the life of eternity. The sacraments of the Church "cover us" throughout our lives! Matrimonio en la Iglesia Una Carta de Nuestro Rector Catedralico Estimados Amigos Nosotros quiz bien podemos recordar de nuestro Catecismo lo que es un sacramento: un signo externo visible... dado a nosotros por Cristo... para darnos gracia. Gracia es poder del cielo dado gratuitamente por Dios para ayudarnos a vivir como es Su voluntad. En la Santa Comuni n nosotros somos sostenidos y fortalecidos con comida y bebida del cielo. En Penitencia y Reconciliaci n nosotros somos liberados de lo que nos puede detener ca dos. En Ordenes Sagrados el sacerdocio de Jesucristo es perpetuado para proveer por la vida de Su Iglesia. En la Unci n de Enfermos las almas son preparadas para la vida eterna. Los sacramentos de la Iglesia "Nos Cubren" a lo largo de nuestras vidas! En el Matrimonio Cristiano un hombre y una mujer son unidos no solo para proveer por la continuaci n de la familia humana pero como una se al de uni n un vinculo que solo la muerte puede quebrar. Mucho como Dios se ata El Mismo a la gente que El ama en un vinculo que solo puede quebrarse por el pecado... ese vinculo puede ser restaurado en el sacramento de Penitencia. S I M O N & J U D E C AT H E D R A L Young Adults to go on Mission in South Africa Over the past seven years many of the Ss. Simon & Jude Cathedral Young Adults have participated in various missions in other countries. In so doing they have experienced a rewarding faith-filled endeavor. Each time these adults would return home with powerful stories of their journeys to share with all of the SSJC teens. A few years ago Ss. Simon & Jude Cathedral Youth Minister Jen Pitera began to pick up on a common thread in these testimonials. Each and every one of the adults on mission returned with a great desire to continue their work and a sincere yearning to do so in community with their peers from the Cathedral. Jen began looking at different organizations which serve in areas outside the United States that might enable the Young Adults to serve as a group. In November of this past year in an answer to prayer Young Adults of the Cathedral were invited to join Amor Ministries as part of their first American team to build hope and homes in Johannesburg South Africa. Cathedral youth have been working for over twelve years with Amor Ministries in Mexico and we have found their organization to be exceptional at providing a safe and faith-filled mission experience. This is an extraordinary time for the Young Adults at the Cathedral. Since November they have been raising money from sources outside of the Cathedral community to pay for their plane tickets which will cost each of them around $1 800. It is their personal responsibility to pay for that part of the mission. In addition to the plane tickets there are additional expenses of ground transportation food water and the cost of purchasing the building materials the group will need in South Africa. The Young Adults are inviting the Cathedral community to join them in their mission of hope. No one expects the entire parish to join them in Johannesburg but each person of the parish is asked to support the group in some way. At all the Masses on the weekend of May 30-31 2009 the Cathedral Parish will have a second collection to help support these committed young people on their mission. Donations will also be taken in the parish or school offices at any time. In addition the Cathedral community is asked to support the Young Adults with their prayers during the mission. The group will depart Phoenix on June 11th and return home late on June 22nd. During that time at 3 6 9 & 12 a.m. or p.m. whenever you are awake stop for a moment and join in praying the Glory Be for the safety of the missionaries and the success of their mission. The Young Adults of the Cathedral wish to thank Fr. Clements and the generous people of the parish for their continued support as the youth continue to bring hope to those in need and work to carry on the mission of the Church. Mission HOPE of 3 S S . S I M O N & J U D E C AT H E D R A L Misi n ESPERANZA de Adultos J venes van a ir al Misi n en Sud frica Sobre los pasados siete a os muchos de los adultos j venes de Ss. Sim n y Judas han participado en varias misiones en otros pa ses. Y as ellos han experimentado un gratificante esfuerzo lleno de fe. Cada vez estos adultos regresaban a casa con historias poderosas de sus jornadas para compartir con los adolescentes de CSSJ. Algunos a os atr s la Ministra de J venes Jen Pitera comenz a notar un hilo com n en estos testimoniales. Cada uno de estos adultos en misi n regresaban con un gran deseo de continuar su trabajo y un anhelo sincero de hacerlo en comunidad con su grupo de la Catedral. Jen comenz mirando diferentes organizaciones cuales sirven en reas afuera de los Estados Unidos que quiz s posibilitar an que los Adultos J venes pudieran servir como grupo. En noviembre de este a o pasado en respuesta a sus oraciones Adultos J venes de la Catedral fueron invitados a unirse a Amor Ministries (Ministerios Amor) como parte de su primer equipo Americano de edificar esperanza y hogares en Johannesburgo Sud frica. J venes de la Catedral han estado trabajando por mas de doce a os con Amor Ministries en M xico y hemos hallado que sus organizaciones son excepcional en provenido una experiencia de misi n segura y llena de fe. Este es un extraordinario tiempo para los Adultos J venes de la Catedral. Desde noviembre ellos han estado recaudando fondos de fuentes afuera de la comunidad Catedral para pagar por sus boleto de avi n cuales les costaran a cada uno de ellos alrededor de $1 800. Es su responsabilidad personal pagar por esa parte de la misi n. Adem s de los boletos de avi n hay gastos adicionales de transporte por tierra alimentos agua y el costo de comprar los materiales de construcci n que el grupo va a necesitar en Sud frica. Los Adultos J venes est n invitando a la comunidad de la Catedral a que se unan con ellos en su misi n de esperanza. Nadie espera que la parroquia entera se una en Johannesburgo pero a cada persona de la parroquia se le pide que apoye al grupo en alguna manera. En todas la Misas el fin de semana de mayo 30-31 2009 la Parroquia de la Catedral tendr una segunda colecta para ayudar en apoyar a estas personas j venes comprometidos en su misi n. En adici n a la comunidad de la Catedral se le pide que apoyen a los Adultos J venes con sus oraciones durante la misi n. El grupo saldr de Phoenix el 11 de junio and regresara tarde el 21 de junio. Durante este tiempo a las 3 6 9 y 12 a.m. o p.m. cuando est n despiertos paren por un momento y nanse en orar el Gloria al Padre por la seguridad de los misioneros y el xito de su misi n. Los j venes de la Catedral desean agradecerle al Padre Clements y a la gente generosa de la parroquia por su apoyo continu al los j venes continuar dando esperanza aquellos en necesidad y trabajan para llevar su misi n en la Iglesia. 4 S S . Society of Love It's daybreak on a Saturday morning and while most people are sleeping in or enjoying a leisurely start to the day members of the St. Vincent de Paul Society are already hard at work. collection which always goes to support the work of SVDP was the largest in recent memory. "We couldn't do what we do without the support we get from the parish " Judy Kelleher President of the St. Vincent de Paul Conference at Ss. Simon & Jude Cathedral expresses with heartfelt sincerity. "We're so blessed to have always had the support of the pastor and the entire parish. Fr. Clements has been wonderful!" There are countless stories of how Society members known as Vincentians have experienced Christ in the people who come to them for assistance. They give not only of their time but of their very selves. They serve because it is a simple act of living out their faith which demonstrates the central message of Christianity -- Love One Another. They see the face of Christ in each person. In sharing what they have with those who have less the Vincentians hope their good works will be seen as a gift from God and those who benefit from those gifts will then give glory and praise to God. Together with the SSJC Boy Scout Troop and other volunteers society members unload a trailer of food and work to stock the shelves of the SVDP food pantry at the Cathedral. Then additional volunteers will pack the food into food boxes to be distributed throughout the week to assist the working poor and homeless in our community. The Saturday preparations are only the beginning of the work the Catholic lay organization does each week. Society members known as Vincentians together with volunteers including families retirees youth SSJC School students and others put in nearly 3000 hours in the first three months of this year alone. In that same time their work involved almost 1300 cases and served approximately 2800 people seeking assistance with food and when possible help with rent or utilities. Recently the Youth Group the school students and the Knights of Columbus all made contributions of either food or money to the society. The annual Lenten Soup Supper enjoyed great success and the most recent fifth Sunday In the same way your light must shine before all so that they may see your good works and give praise and glory to your Father in heaven. Matt 5:16 The primary purpose of the St. Vincent de Paul Society is not to provide material assistance to the poor. The first priority of the organization is to share the love of God. Inspired by Gospel values the society offers people the opportunity to come together to grow spiritually by bringing the love and peace of Christ to those in need. Nonetheless if showing love and compassion means providing food and other assistance then that is what they will do. It is in loving others when they may encounter Christ. That encounter with Christ is what separates the Society of St. Vincent de Paul from just another social service agency offering assistance. The Society of St. Vincent de Paul began in Paris France in 1833 when a young law student at the Sorbonne Fr d ric Ozanam was challenged during a debate to demonstrate what he and his fellow Catholic students were personally doing to help the poor in Paris. Within weeks Ozanam and six of his peers formed the first "Conference of Charity." Under the conference this group of seven men financed their works of charity out of their own pockets and from contributions of friends. They visited the poor in their homes providing them with needed aid and assistance. Ozanam soon placed the conference under the patronage of St. Vincent de Paul who had spent his life in 16th century France serving the poor. The Phoenix Diocesan Council for the Society of St. Vincent de Paul has 89 Conferences of Charity over 2 500 active and associate members known as Vincentians and more than 6 000 volunteers. 5 S S . Sociedad de Amor Esta amaneciendo un s bado y mientras mucha gente esta durmiendo tarde o gozando de un comienzo relajado miembros de la Sociedad San Vicente de Pa l est n duramente trabajando. anual Cena de Sopa Cuaresmal gozo de grande xito y la mas reciente colecta de Quinto Domingo cual siempre va para apoyar el trabajo de SVDP fue la mas grande en la historia reciente. "No pudi ramos hacer lo que hacemos sin el apoyo que recibimos de la parroquia " Judy Kelleher Presidente de la Conferencia de San Vicente de Pa l en la Catedral Ss. Sim n y Judas expres ndose con sinceridad de coraz n. "Somos tan bendecidos de siempre tener el apoyo del pastor y la parroquia. El Padre Clements ha sido maravilloso!" Hay un sin numero de historias de como miembros de la Sociedad conocidos como Vicentinos han experienciado a Cristo en la gente que viene a ellos por asistencia. Ellos dan no solo de su tiempo pero de ellos mismos. Ellos sirven porque es una obra sencilla de vivir su fe cual demuestra el mensaje central de la Cristiandad mense Unos A Otros. Ellos miran el rostro de Cristo en cada persona. En compartiendo lo que tienen con aquellos quienes tienen menos los Vicentinos esperan que sus buenas obras se miren como un regalo de Dios y aquellos que beneficien de estos regalos entonces den gloria y alabanza a Dios. Juntos con la tropa Boy Scout de CSSJ y otros voluntarios miembros de la sociedad descargan un remolque de comida y trabajan para abastecer las baldas de la dispensa de SVDP en la Catedral. Despu s voluntarios adicionales empacaran la comida en cajas de comida para ser distribuidas durante la semana para asistir a los obreros pobres y a los sin hogar de nuestra comunidad. Las preparaciones del s bado son solo el comienzo del trabajo que la organizaci n de seglares Cat licos hacen cada semana. Miembros de la Sociedad conocidos como Vicentinos junto con voluntarios incluyendo familias jubilados joven estudiantes de la escuela de la Catedral y otros metieron casi 3000 horas en los primeros tres meses de este a o. Inspirado por los valores del Evangelio la sociedad ofrece a la gente la oportunidad de unirse para crecer espiritualmente en trayendo el amor y paz de Cristo a aquellos en necesidad. Sin embargo si mostrar amor y compasi n significa proveyendo comida y otra asistencia entonces eso es lo que har n. Es en amando a otros cuando ellos encuentran a Cristo. Ese encuentro con Cristo es lo que separa a la Sociedad de San Vicente de Pa l de cualquier otra agencia de servicio social que ofrece asistencia. La Sociedad de San Vicente de Pa l comenz en Paris Francia en 1833 cuando un estudiante joven de leyes en la Sobonne Fr d ric Ozanam fue retado durante un debate a demostrar lo que el y sus amigos estudiantes Cat licos estaban haciendo personalmente para ayudar a los pobres de Paris. Dentro semanas Ozanam y seis de su amigos formaron la primer "Conferencia de Caridad." Bajo la conferencia este grupo de siete hombres financiaron su obras de caridad de sus propios bolsillos y de contribuciones de amigos. Ellos visitaban a los pobres en sus casas proveyendo la ayuda necesitada y asistencia. Ozanam pronto puso la conferencia bajo el patrocinio de San Vicente de Pa l quien paso su vida en el siglo 16 sirviendo a los pobres de Francia.
