Barbieri Produced by WGO Executive Secretariat Distribution WGO Education and Training Committee Topic WGO Endorsed Advanced Training Centers Topic n 001 Topic Basic Tenet A Center for Advanced Training is a center of excellence that can accommodate practicing endoscopists and advanced trainers from all over the world for hands-on training. These centers must have an established track record have a stable source of financial support and be able to accommodate trainees with respect to housing and local licensure requirements. Centers may/may not charge the trainee tuition and room and board contingent upon the Center's needs and policy but no tuition will be charged to WGO trainees who are required to have the support of their national societies. The Center must train a minimum of three WGO nominees yearly. 002 Requirements for Endorsement The faculty of the Advanced Training Center should be board certified or its equivalent in gastroenterology or surgery have received formal endoscopic training and be recognized within their community and beyond for their technical expertise. There would be a dedicated state-of-the-art endoscopy center either free-standing or within a clinic or hospital setting with videoendoscope computer support and adequate accessory equipment. o The center should adhere to commonly accepted disinfection/sterilization processes (e.g. ASGE/ESGE WGO guidelines on endoscope/accessory high level disinfection). o This center should have an adequate patient load to assure broad exposure and adequate hands-on experience for desired advanced endoscopic techniques. The latter may include mucosectomy control of GI bleeding ERCP with its therapeutic components to include sphincterotomy stone extraction and endoprostheses placement or insertion of SEMS into the GI tract as well as other advanced techniques. o Estimates of procedural numbers should be furnished to the trainee for the agreed upon time period to be spent. An outline of a curriculum for each of the advanced training procedures to be taught should be furnished to the attendees as well as to the WGO. o A Certificate of Attendance as opposed to a Certificate of Competence should be given. o The center should define its curricula curricula faculty describe its current training models (didactic hands-on plastic silicon animal computer generated etc.) its mechanism used to define outcomes/results and whether there is a formal morbidity/mortality conference in place. The Advanced Training Center should submit a yearly summary of training activities to WGO and be willing to undergo an audit of the Training Program at regular (2-year) intervals. A separate report to the WGO Training Committee should be submitted by the Training Center as well as the attendee for each of the Society-nominated attendees. WGO will offer endorsement of the Advance Training Center make available e-teaching through the WGO-OMGE web site and would participate in CME meetings on an ad-hoc basis. 003 The Advanced Training Center may be asked to supply material (video-library) or live feed for eteaching on the WGO website. One member if the WGO Executive Committee and one member if the WGO Education and Training Committee will work with the Advanced Training Center representative on the above-mentioned issues. Collaboration with National Societies In conjunction with major national societies it is anticipated that Endoscopic workshops shall take place at these training centres and be co-hosted by the centre the society and WGO. It is anticipated that these workshops shall include eminent teachers of endoscopy and shall be self funded. The WGO will assist in their promotion as well as inviting the faculty.
