Contents : Comparing the Performance of Baseball Players: A Multiple Output Approach GARY KOOP Department of Economics University of Glasgow Glasgow G12 8RT UK Email: G.Koop@socsci.gla.ac.uk April 2001 In this paper we extend ideas from the economics literature on multiple output production and efficiently to develop methods for comparing baseball players which take into account the fact that there are many dimensions to batting performance. A key part of our approach is the estimation of an output aggregator based on the performance of the best players in baseball. An individual player can then be measured relative to the best and a number between zero and one characterizes his performance as a fraction of the best. The methods are applied using data from 1995-1999 on all regular players in baseball's leagues.
