Contents : Shimberg Research Professor The Shimberg Center for Housing Studies (SCHS) in the M. E. Rinker Sr. School of Building Construction at the University of Florida http://www.bcn.ufl.edu/ seeks applicants for the Shimberg Research Professorship. SCHS was established at the University of Florida in 1988 to promote safe decent and affordable housing and related community development throughout the state of Florida. The Rinker School of Building Construction was establis hed in 1935 and is the oldest continuing construction program in the U.S. and among the leaders nationally. The Center conducts research relating to the problems and solutions associated with the availability of affordable housing in the state. In the past several years the work of SCHS has focused on three areas: comprehensive affordable housing data how housing fits into the broader framework of community development and housing technology. A primary service and research base is the Florida Housing Data Clearinghouse which provides public access to comprehensive data on Florida s housing needs and supply subsidized rental housing household demographics and population project ions. Candidates are encouraged to view the three websites that SCHS maintains: the SCHS general site ( http://www.shimberg.ufl.edu ) the Florida Housing Data Clearinghouse (http://flhousingdata.shimberg.ufl.edu) and the SCHS site on research and data regarding assisted rental housing preservation (http://preservation.shimberg.ufl.edu). Growing areas o f interest and potential funded research include: housing as a sustainability issue particularly transportation land use and energy efficiency neighborhood level data and analysis foreclosures and neighborhood stabilization preservation of public and assisted housing and supportive housing for people with special needs. The Shimberg Research Professor will work closely with the Center Director to provide leadership in the public service and research initiatives of the Center . As a recently urbanized rapidly growing Sunbelt state Florida typifies a part of America that is often underrepresented in housing research. For both its similarity to so much of America and its differences Florida provides a fascinating laboratory for the study of housing. The position will take the lead role in SCHS to administer and conduct research in conjunction with the Director and staff affiliate faculty graduate students and statewide clients. The Center s research and service focus on problems and solutions associated with the availability of affordable housing in the state of Florida and disseminating the results of such research to appropriate public and private audiences in the state and throughout the nation. Specifically job tasks include: Continue and expand current initiatives of the SCHS especially opportunities that build on the capacity and development of the Florida Housing Data Clearinghouse Develop new research initiatives and secure external funding Develop and teach courses in the Building Construction program residential track Continue to foster the productive relationship SCHS has with the Urban and Regional Planning faculty and promote housing and community/economic development as a focus of research and instruction in the College of Design Construction and Planning Assist in the development of financial sponsorship to support SCHS programs and operations through fundraising from a variety of public private and philanthropic sources Support SCHS service to the state and its diverse group of stakeholders agencies and the general public Participate in collaborative relationships with other elements of the University other research institutions public and private agencies corporations and community-based groups. Job Requirements The position will be filled at the rank of Assistant Associate or Full Professor in the Rinker School of Building Construction. Applicants must demonstrate academic credentials and experience appropriate to the academic rank and ability to assume leadership in research teaching and service congruent with the missions of SCHS BCN and the College of DCP. A doctoral degree and an established record of research and scholarly activities are expected commensurate with the level of appointment. Familiarity with local state and national housing programs and policies and fa cility in the use of housing and demographic data in policy research are essential. Successful experience in a university research environment is strongly desirable.
