Contents : education news Geography faces curriculum cuts Geography is one of several subjects whose content could be trimmed to ease perceived curriculum congestion in secondary schools. The proposal outlined in a report from the Qualifications & Curriculum Authority (QCA)* means that from 2008 pupils aged 11 to 14 would be able to drop sections of six content heavy subjects including history geography science design & technology citizenship & personal and social & health education. The move followed a call from Education Ruth Kelly for a review of compulsory key stage 3 material in an effort to help teachers focus on literacy and numeracy. In their response to the review conducted by the QCA 83 per cent of headteachers advocated reducing subject content in what is characterised as the personal development curriculum. It is argued that this would give teachers more time to ensure students master the three Rs and as pupils move on help to raise the hurdle for A-level passes. The curriculum: QCA looks forward.
